What is ProProctor Online Testing?

ProProctor™ Online Testing option allows candidates to take their Driver Theory Test from the comfort of their own home. Please read this page carefully so that you fully understand the Online Testing process and equipment requirements.

Six steps you will need to follow to Test online

1. Windows PC

You must use a Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 laptop or desktop computer. You cannot use your phone, tablet/iPad, Apple Mac computer or Windows 7.

2. Internet Speed 5Mbps+

You should have a minimum of 5Mbps download and 1Mbps upload to successfully Test online. 

3. Google Chrome Web Browser (Windows)

You must have the latest Google Chrome web browser for Windows installed. You cannot use any other type of web browser. What is my web browser?

4. System Readiness Check

If you have successfully followed the steps above please complete the System Readiness Check. This will show if your system is compatible with the Online Testing requirements.

5. Read the User Guide

The User Guide (PDF, 1.2mb) provides details on the steps and requirements for Online Testing so you will be prepared for your Test. We believe that the more you know about what to expect in advance, the more comfortable you will feel testing remotely.

6. Install Online Testing (ProProctor™) software

After you have a created a Theory Test booking or Theory Test appointment then download the ProProctor software. Please note you will not be able to download the ProProctor Software until you have created a Theory Test appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, the Driver Theory Test service has launched a pilot phase of a new initiative, ProProctor, which offers a Online Testing service for all categories of Theory Test.

During the pilot phase Online Testing will be available on a limited basis and extra capacity will be added as it is rolled out to allow more customers to sit their Theory Test online.

Online Testing allows candidates to test from their home or another suitable environment once the minimum requirements for the service have been met.

No. The Online Testing service is only available on laptops or desktop computers (Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 only).

These are the minimum system specifications for online testing:

  • Minimum Screen Resolution: 1024 x 768 (dual-monitor setups are not permitted). Please note: CPC candidates will need to set their Scale and Layout to: Text Size 100% (Recommended) and Screen Resolution to 1920 x 1080.
  • Operating System: Windows 8.1 or Windows 10.
  • Web Browser: Latest Google Chrome for Windows.
  • Webcam Resolution: 640 x 480p.
  • Microphone: Enabled.
  • Minimum Internet Speed: 5Mbps (Download) and 1Mbps (Upload).

Online Testing is a pilot phase and available initially on a limited basis for all categories of Theory Test.

Extra capacity will be added as it is rolled out to allow more customers to sit their Theory Test online.

Your testing environment must meet the following minimum guidelines:

  • Testing location must be indoors (walled), well-lit, free from background noise and disruptions.
  • No third-party may be present in the room or enter the room for the duration of the exam. If this occurs, your exam will be terminated and/or your results invalidated.
  • Your workstation and surrounding area must be free of pens, paper, electronic devices etc. No content that could potentially provide an unfair advantage during your exam, including that posted on walls or within your immediate area, should be present during your exam session.

Yes, you can reschedule your exam from a Test Centre to Online Testing (ProProctor) or from Online Testing to a Test Centre.

You can reschedule your booking providing the request is made no later than 5 business days (to include 3 complete business days) prior to your Test date.

For example, to reschedule or cancel a Test booked for a Friday you must inform us on the previous Monday or for a Test booked for a Saturday you must inform us on the previous Monday.

Alternatively, please call our Candidate Services Team on 0818 606 106 (Lo-call rate) Monday to Friday from 8AM to 6PM to arrange a reschedule. Please ensure you have run the System Readiness Check and your system meets the requirements for Online Testing.

You can use the System Readiness Check on the official ProProctor website.

It will determine whether your system is compatible to install and run the ProProctor application so that you can take your Theory Test from home.

Please also test your internet speed to ensure it is fast enough. You will need 5Mbps download and 1Mbps upload speed.

In order to start an exam, you are required to:

  • Show your ID as listed in the form at the bottom of this page.
  • Show your eligibility as listed on the booking page if applicable (eg B licence for Category C Theory Test takers).
  • Show your workstation and surrounding area.
  • Raise your trouser legs above your ankles, empty and turn all pockets inside-out and raise shirt sleeves above your wrists prior to every entry into the online test. If you are wearing eyeglasses you will be required to remove them for visual inspection to ensure they don’t contain a recording device.
  • Remove large jewellery items from your person prior to and throughout the duration of the exam.
  • Pull your hair back to ensure nothing is attached to your ear that could provide an unfair advantage – i.e. a bluetooth earpiece.
  • Unauthorised personal items may not be accessible while testing. Such items include, but are not limited to: outerwear, hats, food, drinks, handbags, bags or briefcases, notebooks, watches, cell phones, electronic devices, or wearable technology.
  • Eating, drinking, smoking, and chewing gum are prohibited during the exam.
  • Written notes, published materials and other testing aids are strictly prohibited.
  • Light clothing items removed for comfort such as jumpers, suit jackets, scarves, etc must be hung on the examinee’s chair, not placed in laps or on the workstation desktop. Outerwear such as heavy coats, parkas, rain coats, etc is not permitted in the immediate testing area.

Changing location while testing, turning off lighting or audio, speaking to or receiving aid from other individuals is strictly prohibited.

Audio and Video monitoring is required to complete the Online Testing process. These recordings are held for a maximum of 30 days and held in accordance with our Privacy Policy Guidelines.

Please see our Online Testing Support Page where you will see answers to common issues or contact our support team. Please note you must contact support on the day of your Test or the team will not be able to help and you will forfeit your testing fee.

If you get disconnected due to poor internet or laptop failure etc, you will be allowed to restart your Test a maximum of three times.

If you disconnect more that three times your exam will be cancelled and you will lose your Test fee.

You will forfeit your Test fee.

If you don’t present the appropriate ID for your Theory Test you will not be permitted to test and you will forfeit your Test fee.

If testing via Online Testing you will receive an email with a link to your results shortly after completing your exam.

You can now apply online for your Learner Permit at the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) website. All you need is your Public Services Card and your verified MyGovID.

There is no need to complete paper forms, book appointments or attend an NDLS centre. Read more about NDLS Online.

To uninstall (on Windows) go to:

Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program.

Select ProProctor and choose Uninstall.
