When You Must Take a Driver Theory Test Again – Categories (BW) & (AM)

From 1st November 2026, you will need to take a Driver Theory Test again if any of the following apply:

  1. You have not taken a driving test in the previous 2 years when applying for a third or fourth learner permit.
  2. You have already held four learner permits, there will be no fifth permit allowed (unless you were medically restricted).
  3. Your learner permit has been expired for 2 years or more.

Summary by Permit Number

  • 3rd Permit: you can only renew if you have taken a driving test in the past 2 years — otherwise, you take a Driver Theory Test again.
  • 4th Permit: same rule applies, you must have taken a test in the last 2 years; this permit will only last 1 year.
  • After 4 Permits (around 7 years total): you cannot renew and must take a Driver Theory Test Again.
