Identification Requirements

With effect from 1st October 2010 you must bring ONE form of acceptable proof of identification from the list below with you, PLUS Two Identical Passport Type Photographs that conform to the standards detailed below.

 

Category A and Category B Candidates:

The following Identification Documents are acceptable.  Please note that only valid and original documents will be accepted:

  • passport 
  • a national ID card issued by :  Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden or Switzerland
  • an employee or student identity card 
  • a Garda National Age Card 
  • a Convention travel document with the name and photo of the holder 
  • a bank or Savings Bank book 
  • a cheque book 
  • a cheque card 
  • a credit card 
  • a credit union membership card 
  • a book issued for payment of social welfare allowances, benefits or pensions, a free travel card or a signing on card by the Department of Social Community and Family Affairs 
  • a medical card issued in the State 
  • a birth certificate 
  • a marriage certificate 
  • an Immigration Certificate of Registration issued by the GNIB

 

Category C and Category D Candidates

 

You must bring your current Category B driving license with you for identification and validation purposes. We can only accept valid and original documents. It must be an Irish driving license or one from another EU Member state, or from Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Norway

 

If you do not bring your current Category B driving licence with you or you are late for your appointment, you will not be allowed to sit your test and you will lose your fee.

 

Passport Type Photographs (required from 1st October 2010):

 

You must bring TWO identical colour passport size photographs:
Standards for acceptable photographs:

 

·        Photographs should be not more than 6 months old.

·        They must be in colour.

·        Minimum photos size 35mm x 45mm, maximum size 38mm x 50mm. 

·        The photograph should show a full front view of the subject’s head, as he or she would normally appear.

·        The image must be sharp and clear, and taken against a plain white or light grey background.

·        Sunglasses are not acceptable. Tinted glasses may be worn provided they do not obscure the person's eyes.

Only head coverings worn for religious reasons are permitted. Hair bands are not allowed.

 

The head should be centred in the image. A frontal pose looking directly at the camera and showing full face must be used and should be taken against a plain white, cream or light grey background. There should be a marked contrast between your facial features and the background of the photographs. Rotation or tilting of the head either in an up/down or left/right direction must be avoided.

 

It is essential that the photographs submitted meet the photo standards. These are based on internationally accepted standards.

 

Unacceptable photographs include where the face is not clear, the top of the head is not showing, person has dark glasses, home produced photographs which are not identical or where the photos taken against a dark background.

 

Candidates who do not bring both an acceptable proof of identification AND two identical passport sized photographs will not be allowed to sit their test and will loose their fee.
