Important Update to the ID Policy for all Theory Test (including CPC Step 1 & 2) exams
The Public Services Card (PSC) is acceptable as identity confirmation for access to the Driver Theory Test Service (DTTS). It may also allow you access to the National Driver Licence Service online and postal applications in the future.
From 20 August 2018 there will be an option to use other forms of identity documentation at the test centre.
Any one of the following forms of identity will be acceptable:
- Public Services Card
- Passports (Irish passports and other passports valid for international only or up to maximum 12 months expired)
- Irish Passport Cards
- National Identity Card from EU/EEA Member States or Switzerland
- Irish Category B (Car) or Category A (Motorcycle) Learner Permit or Full Driving Licence

At the time of booking the test, applicants will be asked to confirm that they possess a valid form of ID from the list below:
- Public Services Card
- Passports (valid for international use only or up to maximum 12 months expired)
- Irish Passport Cards
- National Identity Card from EU/EEA Member States or Switzerland
- Irish Category B (Car) or Category A (Motorcycle) Learner Permit or Full Driving Licence
Applicants must ensure they bring the valid form of ID to the testing centre to be presented in advance to sitting the test.
Applicants will need to ensure that the spelling of the name in which they book their test matches exactly the spelling of their name on the ID.
Theory Tests can be taken at 43 test centre locations around the country as part of the RSA’s driver testing and licensing process.
Test Category C & D Candidates
In addition to the identification requirement detailed above Test Category C & D Candidates must also bring with them:
- A current Category C or D Irish Learner Permit
- A full current Category C or D Irish Driving Licence, (or one from an EU/EEA member state or Switzerland)
- A full current Category B Irish Driving Licence (or one from an EU/EEA member state or Switzerland)
